Toyota Camry (XV70): Transfer System

Precaution

PRECAUTION

PRECAUTION

(a) Before disassembling the transfer assembly, thoroughly clean it to remove any foreign matter. This will help prevent contamination inside the transfer during disassembly and reassembly.

(b) When removing the transfer cover or any other light alloy parts, do not pry them off with a screwdriver or other tool that may cause damage. Instead, tap the parts with a plastic-faced hammer.

(c) Always arrange removed parts in the order they were removed and protect them from foreign matter.

(d) Before installation of each part, thoroughly clean and dry it. Then apply grease or oil as necessary. Do not use alkaline chemicals to clean aluminum parts, rubber parts or precoated bolts. Also, do not use non-residue solvent or other cleaning oils to clean O-rings, oil seals or rubber parts.

(e) Coat sliding surfaces and rotating parts with Toyota genuine differential gear oil LT SAE 75W-85 API GL-5 or equivalent if necessary.

(f) Do not directly fix a part in a vise. Place aluminum plates between the part and vise.

(g) Replace any snap rings with new ones.

(h) Do not allow the case mating surfaces to be scratched. Scratches may lead to oil leakage.

(i) Before applying sealant, remove deposited oil sealant and clean the part to be sealed using non-residue solvent.

(j) After assembling parts which have been applied with sealant, leave the parts for at least 1 hour without adding oil. Also, avoid any sudden acceleration or deceleration for the next 12 hours.

(k) Do not allow scratches on surfaces which contact oil seals, O-rings or gaskets. Scratches may lead to oil leakage.

(l) When press-fitting an oil seal, be careful not to damage the lip of the oil seal and its periphery and be sure not to press it in at an angle.

(m) When replacing a bearing, replace the inner and outer races as a set.

(n) When replacing a bearing, do not put stress on the roller, retainer or rolling contact surface.

(o) When replacing a hypoid gear, replace the ring gear and drive pinion gear as a set.

(p) New bearings are coated with anti-rust oil. If using new bearings, do not clean off this coating.

(q) Replace bolts if the bearing surface or threads are significantly rusty.
